Responsible for the coordination of all arts and crafts related program activities for the camp program. This includes planning, implementing and evaluating goal-based arts and crafts programs that are appropriate to the age and ability level of the campers. Under the supervision of the camp Leadership Team this Leader is also responsible for the immediate safety, care, and well being of 6-8 campers or 1-2 families assigned to them. This position lives in the cabins for the duration of the summer and is responsible for carrying out the activity schedule, planning cabin activities, assisting with personal care and activities of daily living, sleeping with campers on overnight tent camp-outs, camper rest hour and cabin supervisory duties, being in pool with campers, and other duties as assigned.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

1. Work with individuals of all ages with disabilities in an outdoor setting.
2. Coordinate goal-based arts & crafts programming as well as other camp activities.
3. Maintain confidentiality of information received about campers.
4. Communicate verbally and in writing, prepare reports and evaluations, read instructions, manuals and camper information, and participate in staff meetings.
5. Assist campers (100-300lbs.) with transfers from a wheelchair to a bed, chair and/or toilet.
6. Assist campers with personal activities of daily living (toileting, bathing, eating, mobility, dressing, etc.…)
7. Lift and carry equipment, supplies and/or camper luggage weighing 50lbs over 30 yards.
8. Independence in orientation and mobility of campgrounds.
9. Ability to provide signature.
10. Be in water with campers during swim activities (does not need to know how to swim to perform this function).

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Prepare program plans, written reports, awards, summaries, incident reports, and evaluations of programs and campers.
2. Plan and lead goal-based arts and crafts activities appropriate to the camper’s ages & ability levels.
3. Inventory and maintain arts and crafts supplies in good working order; request more when needed.
4. Maintain clean arts and crafts storage and activity areas, including cleaning areas daily.
5. Offer assistance for props and decorations for camp programs.
6. Ensure staff and campers know, and follow, safety procedures related to program area.
7. Train staff to assist in program area.
8. Maintain a healthy camp environment through daily camp clean up including sweeping, vacuuming, emptying trash, cleaning toilets, sinks, showers, etc.…
9. Maintain and follow daily camp schedule for self and campers.
10. Actively participate, assist or lead all-camp activities, evening programs, campfire programming (camp songs, skits), and camp-outs as directed.
11. Sleep outdoors in tents on camper overnight camp-outs and cook over a fire.
12. Assist campers on out-of-camp field trip activities.
13. Assist campers with the activities of daily living to include dressing, feeding, bathing, and toileting, keeping clothes and personal items together, and providing support in the event of behaviors or homesickness.
14. Assist campers in dining room routines to include sitting with campers at all meals.
15. Attend to campers during assigned cabin time including rest hour and evening cabin duty.
16. Sleep in the room with, or adjacent to, campers and assist them overnight as needed.
17. Orient campers to physical layout of cabin and general campgrounds.
18. Supervise campers in the pool by being in the water with them as directed by the Lifeguard on duty.
19. Communicate camper information to Supervisors and/or Camp Nurse.
20. Honor curfews, schedules, policies, and procedures of Highbrook Lodge.
21. Other duties that will be assigned that are within the scope and responsibility of the position.

Minimum 18 years old by first day of camp.

1. Education: High school diploma or equivalent and college/ university experience preferably with coursework emphasis in recreation, education, social services, art, rehabilitation, therapy or the like.
2. Experience: Demonstration of a particular knowledge of work with children, adults, seniors, and people with disabilities. Prior camp experience and experience leading and planning arts and crafts activities for all age ranges preferred.
3. General: Individual with a demonstrated experience and interest in camping and art. Must demonstrate maturity and responsibility; time management and organizational skills. Must have the ability to be a self-starter and work as a team. Must demonstrate good judgment and integrity; strong social and communication skills. Ability to learn and grow in the position through constructive feedback from supervisors. Must be able to live on-site at camp from June-August with minimal time off.
4. Physical: Ability and stamina to work in a fast paced environment. Ability and stamina to endure long, irregular hours in a position that is both physically and emotionally demanding. Physical ability to ambulate, lift, push wheelchairs, walk long distances, hike, and participate in sports, games, and activities. Exposure to cleaning agents.
